Daniel Andrews announces women’s health clinic election promise

Victorian women could soon have a range of their health problems dealt with in one place under an ambitious state government election promise.

Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement on Tuesday morning, saying the decision was an attempt to highlight and help treat certain health conditions.

The $71 million plan will focus on 20 comprehensive women’s health clinics in Victoria.

These would cost the state $58 million and become a one-stop shop for women who need treatment or advice on issues from contraception to pelvic pain.

Andrews said the clinics will aim to put many of women’s health needs in one place.

“For too long, many women have not been listened to and their health issues ignored. This plan will transform women’s health care, ensuring all Victorian women can access the support and treatment they need and deserve,” she said.

“Some of the most common conditions women experience go undiagnosed and tragically untreated, sometimes until it’s too late. It’s about making sure women get the care and peace of mind they need.”

The clinics would be used to treat menstrual pain, fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain and polycystic ovary syndrome and manage menopausal symptoms.

Aboriginal health organizations would also be consulted to provide an Aboriginal-led women’s health clinic that would offer personalized support to Indigenous women.

According to the plan, one hundred additional specialists would be needed to support the training and recruitment of workers for the new clinics, at a cost of 2 million dollars.

Another $5.3 million would be spent on a mobile women’s health clinic to visit remote parts of the state, and $6.4 million would be used to establish nine other sexual and reproductive health centers.

The centers provide information to women about contraception and pregnancy options, including clinical services for women choosing long-acting reversible contraceptive methods and support services for women choosing medical termination of pregnancy.
